I’m against it.
What about Physician-Assisted Suicide?
I’m against it.
Reasons to Oppose Physician-Assisted Suicide
- It creates a dichotomy of mental-health care, whereby people with disabilities and terminal illnesses are subject to a different kind of care if they experience depression.
- It reinforces socioeconomic disparities because it will ALWAYS be cheaper to kill people than care for them.
- It denies that depression is a treatable mental illness, that suicide is preventable, that most suicides are impulsive.
- It reimagines mental healthcare as a system in which dying is healthcare, and suicide is acceptable for some, when it should NEVER be a goal—building a life experienced as worth living is the ULTIMATE goal.
Are You Thinking About Killing Yourself?
Don’t! Your life is valuable. Call your local crisis clinic. They will not lock you up, but they will help make you safe in your home.
Know that most suicides are not completed (i.e., do not end with a death of the suicidal person), and you may be left living with disabilities or in need of serious neurorehabilitation.
Here’s Dr. Tracey Marks on how to make yourself safe when you’re suicidal.
